You spend your time writing and crafting your piece, you polish it until it can’t possibly shine anymore. It is forged in your own sweat and tears and so it becomes a part of you, an element of your very essence. 

Then you release it to the world.

What happens? 

Nothing. 

It shifts a handful of copies. Mrs Miggins up the street writes a nice review saying it was the best thing she had ever read. But apart from that, nothing! Zero, Nadna, Zlich! 

You want to scream. You want to throw your computer out of the window. You know for a fact that your book is way better written that hundreds, if not thousands, of books that are out there which ARE making money. 

I had sold some books on Kindle, so I knew it was possible to make some money. The problem was that the number of books I was shifting each month was, shall we say, limited. Each book could probably feed my cat for a week, but certainly not enough to allow me to quit my day job and, dreaming even further down the line, actually allow me the financial freedom to do as I wished. 

I’d written books on a wide range of topics: self help books, cook books, biographies, children’s books, how-to guides, comedy and everything in-between. 

They were good!

And yes, everything sold something! But it wasn’t enough for my efforts and input. 

I bet that you are just the same. You seem to have tried everything, you manage to sell a few copies but the sales aren’t where you would like. 

I was looking at my list of books and then the idea hit me: FICTION. I haven’t tried fiction. 

Fiction far outstrips the non-fiction sales on Amazon. Don’t believe me? Have a look at the top one hundred selling books on Amazon.com. When I did this exercise, do you know how many of the top selling 100 titles were non-fiction? Just 8. So 92% of the top selling titles were fiction pieces.

So why was I wasting my time with crappy cookery books that no-one wanted to buy?

Then another string of questions hit me, at the top of the list was this: There are like a million-zillion genres in fiction - which should I write in?

Then another grim realisation hit me. Fiction books are novels. Novels are long. Lots of words equals lots of time and effort. I certainly didn’t want to write for months and months and then find that my work have failed.  

Then, scanning the Amazon charts, I spied a fiction book doing really well that had just 58 pages! 58 pages? That wasn’t a novel, was it? A little further research showed that this wasn’t just a one-off; there were loads of books at one hundred pages or less that were doing well. 

My first short read fiction title was in a crazy little genre. And it did okay. However, I knew that it could do better. And I suddenly realised…I needed to promote the book. 

I then immersed myself in the world of book promotion, I must have spent thousands buying everything there was out there. But nothing quite hit the mark. Then I discovered the most simple solution in the world, and now my book promotions cost me less than $50 a book, more often than not, just $30.
